Tooth-Colored Filling

Filling Post-Op Instructions:

Caring for Your Tooth After a Composite Filling

Thank you for visiting us today! Your tooth has been restored with a strong, natural-looking tooth-colored (resin) filling. Please follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and comfort.

1. Numbness

  • Your lips, cheeks, and tongue may feel numb for 1–3 hours after treatment.

  • Be careful not to chew, bite, or burn yourself while the area is still numb.

  • Avoid eating until the numbness completely wears off.

2. Eating and Drinking

  • Once the numbness is gone, you may eat and drink normally.

  • Avoid very hard, sticky, or chewy foods for the first 24 hours to allow the filling to fully set and bond.

  • Tooth-colored fillings harden immediately with curing light, but gentle care helps ensure their longevity.

3. Tooth Sensitivity

  • It’s normal to have mild sensitivity to cold, heat, or pressure for a few days to a couple of weeks.

  • This sensitivity should gradually decrease with time.

  • If needed, use a sensitivity toothpaste (like Sensodyne) and avoid extreme temperature foods.

  • If sensitivity or pain worsens or lasts longer than 2 weeks, please contact our office.

 4. Bite and Comfort

  • Your bite may feel slightly “off” after the anesthesia wears off.

  • If you experience pain when biting or notice your teeth don’t fit together comfortably, call us to adjust your filling — even a minor adjustment can make a big difference.

 5. Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss normally — your new filling is fully set and can be cleaned like a natural tooth.

  • Good oral hygiene helps prevent future decay around the filling.

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice daily.

 6. Longevity and Maintenance

  • Composite fillings are durable but can wear over time, especially if you grind your teeth.

  • If you clench or grind, ask us about a nightguard to protect your teeth.

  • Maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months.

 7. Call Us If You Experience:

  • Sharp or lingering pain after 2 weeks

  • Swelling or sensitivity that worsens instead of improves

  • A filling that feels rough, high, or chipped
