Dental Crown Pre-Op Instructions:
Preparing for Your Dental Crown Appointment
Getting ready for your dental crown procedure is simple! These steps will help ensure your visit and recovery go smoothly.
1. Before Your Appointment
Temporary crowns protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being made. They are not as strong as the final crown, so please follow these precautions:
Medications & Health Conditions
-
Please inform us of any changes in your health, medications, or allergies.
-
If you take prescribed medications, continue them as directed unless advised otherwise by your dentist or physician.
-
If you require antibiotic premedication for certain conditions (such as heart issues or joint replacements), take it as prescribed.
Eating & Drinking
-
Eat a light meal before your appointment — especially if you’ll receive local anesthesia.
-
Avoid caffeine and alcohol before your visit.
-
If you’ll be sedated, please follow fasting instructions provided by our team.

Caring for Your Tooth After a Crown Appointment
1. If You Have a Temporary Crown
Temporary crowns protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being made. They are not as strong as the final crown, so please follow these precautions:
Eating & Drinking
-
Avoid sticky foods (gum, caramels, taffy) and hard foods (nuts, ice, hard candy) that could loosen or break the temporary crown.
-
Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
-
Avoid very hot or cold foods if your tooth feels sensitive.
Brushing & Flossing
-
Brush gently around the temporary crown as usual.
-
When flossing, slide the floss out from the side instead of pulling it straight up — this prevents the temporary from dislodging.
If the Temporary Crown Comes Off
-
Call our office as soon as possible so we can re-cement it.
-
If you cannot come in immediately, you may place the crown back on the tooth using temporary dental cement (available at most pharmacies) until your visit.
-
Do not use glue or household adhesives.
2. After Receiving Your Permanent Crown
Your new crown is durable and made to look and feel natural. Mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal for a few days.
Sensitivity
-
It’s normal to experience slight sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days after cementation.
-
Use a sensitivity toothpaste (like Sensodyne) and avoid extreme temperatures until sensitivity improves.
Discomfort
-
Mild soreness in the gum area around the crown is normal.
-
Take over-the-counter pain relief (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as directed if needed.
Bite Adjustment
-
Your bite may feel slightly “off” at first.
-
If your bite feels uneven or if you experience persistent pain when chewing, call us for a quick adjustment — don’t try to wait it out.
Oral Hygiene
-
Brush and floss daily around the crown — it’s important to keep the gum line clean.
-
Crowns protect the tooth, but decay can still occur at the edges if not kept clean.
3. Long-Term Care
-
Avoid using your crown (or any teeth) to bite hard objects (ice, pens, fingernails).
-
Maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months.
-
With proper care, your crown can last many years!
4. Call Our Office If You Experience:
-
Pain that worsens after a few days
-
Persistent sensitivity to temperature or pressure
-
The crown feels loose or comes off
-
Swelling, bleeding, or gum irritation that doesn’t improve
