Dental Implant Pre-Op Instructions:
Before Your Dental Implant Surgery
Proper preparation helps ensure a successful procedure and smooth recovery.
1. Before Your Appointment
-
Eat a light meal unless instructed to fast (especially if receiving sedation).
-
If you’re prescribed antibiotics or medications, take them as directed.
-
Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home if sedation or anesthesia will be used.
-
Avoid alcohol or tobacco for at least 24 hours before your surgery — these can affect healing.
2. Medications & Health Conditions
-
Inform your dentist about all current medications, supplements, and any medical conditions.
-
Continue prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise.
-
If you take blood thinners, consult your dentist and physician about temporarily pausing use.
3. Hygiene Before Surgery
-
Brush and floss thoroughly before your appointment to reduce bacteria in the mouth.
-
Avoid wearing makeup, lipstick, or perfume on the day of surgery.
Dental Implant Post-Op Instructions:
After Your Dental Implant Surgery
A little care goes a long way in helping your implant heal properly.
1. Bleeding & Swelling
-
Slight bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours. Bite gently on the gauze to control it.
-
Minor swelling or bruising may occur — apply a cold compress on the outside of your cheek (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) for the first 24 hours.
-
Keep your head elevated while resting to help reduce swelling.
2. Eating & Drinking
-
Avoid eating until the numbness has worn off.
-
Start with soft foods (yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs) for the first few days.
-
Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods and do not use straws — suction can disrupt healing.
-
Stay hydrated, but avoid carbonated or alcoholic drinks.
3. Pain & Medication
-
Mild soreness is normal for several days. Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
-
If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the full course even if you feel fine.
4. Oral Hygiene
-
Do not brush the surgical area for the first 24 hours.
-
After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 8 oz. water) several times a day — especially after meals.
-
Continue brushing other areas of your mouth normally, avoiding direct contact with the surgical site until your dentist advises.
5. Smoking & Alcohol
-
Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least one week after surgery. These can delay healing and increase the risk of implant failure.
6. Activity
-
Rest for the remainder of the day after surgery.
-
Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least 48 hours.
7. What’s Normal
-
Mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising is common and should improve within a few days.
-
Slight bleeding when brushing or rinsing may occur during the first few days.
8. Call Us If You Notice:
-
Excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure.
-
Severe or increasing pain after the first 3–4 days.
-
Persistent swelling or redness that worsens.
-
Fever, chills, or any signs of infection.
-
The implant feels loose or your bite feels uneven.
